He did not have a clean ₹ per unit in his head.

I told him, stop hunting a newspaper tariff.

Open last bill.

Find energy charge.

Find units on that same bill.

Divide.

That blended rate is good enough for a next-month guess.

I dont pretend it is the official slab card.

Why the printed rate feels missing

A lot of PDFs hide the simple rate.

They show slabs, duty, fuel, rebate, arrears, all in one pile.

Eye goes blurry.

You just want one number to multiply.

I want that too.

I work in a office.

I am not a tariff clerk.

So I cheat in a honest way.

I take last energy line, say ₹1,890.

Units that month, say 270.

1,890 divided by 270 is 7.

That 7 is blended.

It already smuggles a bit of slab mix if they billed in chunks.

It may also include a surcharge that sat inside energy.

Or it may be clean energy only.

I look at the label.

If the line says energy charges, I use that.

If the only rupee I trust is the grand total, I pause.

Grand total has fixed charge, maybe tax, maybe last balance.

Dividing grand total by units makes a fat rate that double counts fixed next time.

That is the usual mess.

So, energy by units, not total by units.

If energy is not labelled, I pick the biggest line that moves when units move.

Fixed charge stays almost same month to month.

Energy jumps with the AC.

You can see which is which after two bills.

I keep last three PDFs in a email folder named bills, very original.

When cousin asks, I open one.

I do the divide on the phone calculator.

I say, type 7, or 7.2, dont overthink the second decimal unless you enjoy pain.

Energy charge divided by units, the only trick

Let me walk a ugly bill in words.

Units 270.

Energy 1,890.

Fixed 80.

Duty 95.

Total something like 2,065, I am rounding.

Blended energy rate is 1,890 / 270 = 7.

If I wrongly do 2,065 / 270, I get about 7.65.

Then I add fixed again in the tool.

I have counted fixed twice, and duty twice.

Estimate goes high.

Cousin thinks I am scaring him.

I am just bad at picking the line.

So I repeat.

Energy over units.

Fixed goes in the fixed box later.

Duty, if I want it, I can add into fixed as a lump, or push the rate from 7 to 7.3.

One place only.

This month he has 310 units, not 270.

I dont need a new official table.

I take 310 times 7 = 2,170 energy.

Plus 80 fixed.

Plus maybe 95 duty if I copied last duty.

Total near 2,345.

If this month is hotter, duty might move a little.

I still call it a guess.

If this month crossed a slab he did not cross last time, blended 7 is a bit soft.

Real energy might sit higher.

I tell him that.

I say, if you jumped from 270 to 400, your average rate may climb.

Then I point him at two-slab mode on the electricity bill calculator.

He can put first slab units from last PDF, first rate, second rate.

That is better than a single 7 when the jump is huge.

For a 20 unit difference, single 7 is fine.

I am not writing a thesis.

I want a number before the bill SMS arrives.

worked example

On the picture I used 270 units and 1,890 energy.

Rate lands on 7.

Then I type 310 in the units box, rate 7, fixed 80.

That is the estimate flow.

You can do same with your PDF.

If last energy was 3,200 on 400 units, rate is 8.

Then this month 360 units is 2,880 energy before fixed.

Simple.

If last energy was 900 on 200 units, rate is 4.5.

Maybe a subsidy month.

Dont carry 4.5 into a month where subsidy is gone.

Ask, was that a special bill.

What I do with that blended rate on this site

I open the tool.

Units this month, the new reading gap.

Mode, single rate, if I only have the blended number.

Rate box, that 7.

Fixed charge, copy last fixed if the connection did not change.

Calculate.

I read energy, fixed, total.

I send cousin the total and the word estimate.

I also send the 7, so he can argue with himself later.

If he finds a clearer slab on page 2 of the PDF, we switch mode.

First slab units, first slab rate, second rate.

Fixed same.

The electricity bill calculator is built for that, user typed rates, not a fake city dropdown.

I will not add 40 DISCOM names and pretend they stay frozen.

Boards change things.

Your last bill is fresher than my memory.

If he has two months on one bill, I divide carefully.

Energy for the whole cycle, units for the whole cycle.

Rate still works.

Then for a half month guess, I take half the units, not half the fixed, because fixed is often per month or per bill, I check the sheet.

When I am unsure about fixed, I run once with 0 and once with last fixed.

I send both.

Range again.

People hate ranges.

They still need them.

If he lost every old bill, I ask the neighbour in the same society, same connection type.

Not a friend in another city.

Not a shop rate.

Where people pick a wrong rate

They Google average electricity rate India and type 6.

That number is a soup.

Your meter is not soup.

They use the rate from a hotel invoice.

They use the number written on a inverter brochure.

They type 70 because the bill showed 7.0 and their thumb slipped.

They type last grand total as if it were a rate.

They ignore that last bill had arrears of ₹1,200.

Arrears are old unpaid, not this month energy.

If you divide including arrears, your rate looks insane.

Next month estimate becomes a horror film.

I check the arrears line first now.

I learnt.

They also mix prepaid recharge with postpaid rate.

Prepaid pack can have a different looking rupee.

Still, divide energy-like debit by units if the app shows both.

If the app only shows rupees left, you cannot invent units.

Another miss, using winter bill rate for a summer guess after they added a second AC.

The rate may be ok.

The units will not be.

Rate problem and units problem are different.

This post is rate.

Units you get from meter, or from a appliance guess like the AC running cost and power consumption.

Then come back.

I wrote 320 units electricity bill, rough amount for the multiply step.

This page is only, I dont know what to multiply with.

Rate is divide.

Fixed is add.

Dont blend those two sentences.

A few messy real weeks I remember

One week the PDF had energy as 0 because of a adjustment, and a huge credit.

Divide by units and you get 0.

I almost typed 0 in the tool.

I did not.

I went one bill older.

Zero energy is a clue the sheet is a correction, not a teacher.

Another week, units were estimated by the board, not read.

The rate still can be used.

The units were fiction.

Next bill they true-up.

My estimate using their estimated units was as wrong as they were.

I told cousin, if the bill says assessed or average, dont treat units as gospel.

Another week, two names on two meters, one PDF forwarded, he divided the wrong energy by the wrong units.

House A energy, house B units.

Rate came 14.

He panicked.

I asked for both PDFs.

Math calmed down.

So, match the two numbers from the same sheet.

Same account.

Same month.

I sound like a school teacher.

Fine.

This is the whole skill.

Pull last bill.

Divide energy charge by units.

Type that rate.

Guess this month units.

Add fixed.

Call it estimate, not official.

When the real SMS comes, if the gap is ₹80, I shrug.

If the gap is ₹2,000, I look for arrears, wrong meter, or a slab jump I ignored.

I do not look for a conspiracy.

And I dont paste a fake circular to look smart.

Your PDF already did the official part.

I only steal the blended rupee from it.
